Making a Change

Travel is one of the biggest parts of most people’s carbon footprint. The good news is that how we travel and where we stay make a real difference, often more than whether we travel at all.

Here is how Sustayn helps you change it:

  1. See it. Every trip shows the CO₂ of your journey and your stay before you pay.
  2. Choose better. Taking the train instead of driving the same distance emits well under half the CO₂; flying emits more than driving. Eco-friendly places to stay emit less than an average hotel.
  3. Put it back. Plant a tree and its yearly CO₂ absorption is taken off your Net CO₂.
  4. Share it. Tell others on Green Feed what worked, and see how much the community has saved on the leaderboard.

The leaderboard ranks members by CO₂ saved: each trip is compared with driving the same distance and staying in an average UK hotel, and the trees you plant are added on top.

How is CO₂ calculated?

The CO₂ of a trip is made up of two parts:

  • Your journey: the route from your starting point to the stay, for the way you travel (car, train or plane).
  • Your stay: the footprint of the accommodation, from the data we hold for each property.

Your Net CO₂ adds up the CO₂ of your paid trips and takes away what your planted trees absorb in a year. A figure above zero means you have emitted more than you have offset so far.
